Zhe worms are everywhere. Do not listen to zheir singing. Do you hear me? Do not listen to zhem. Arm yourselves quickly.

[There's a pair of turrets stationed on either side of the street. They fire indiscriminately at anything that moves, which includes Marie Delacroix, crouched down behind a dumpster, steadily acquiring more and more bullet holes. She peeks around the edge of her cover, firing off one round, and then another. They strike, piercing through the armored shell, and the second one is met with an explosion. Marie hardly hesitates before she rushes out into the open, something preternaturally fast about her movements. If she can duck down inside its range, she can hack the fucking thing...]

[They look almost human, bipedal and fleshy, but something horrible has taken them over from within. One levels a shotgun at Marie, begging miserably,]
Kill me.
[Another is a step behind, head tilted back to swill down a large mouthful of vodka, liquid dribbling over its face. The empty bottle is thrown at her furiously as it in turns pleads,]
Hurry. Run.

[Hacking apart a foul-smelling egg - life humming inside - with a laser rapier, Marie is being harassed by a swarm of insects, a cloud of something noxious hanging around her, expelled from the pulsating egg. She knows the caretakers must be close...]

[The creature lowers its shoulder, barreling forward and knocking her onto her side. She falls with a grunt, feet lashing out as she lifts her pistol. She fires one round that doesn't halt the monster in the slightest before it jams and she's forced to bludgeon annelid's head in with the butt of the gun. By the time it falls, head bleeding, it has clawed Marie viciously. Deja vu, she's lying very still on the pavement.]

What the hell are these things?

Do not just stand zhere, run.
no subject
[Not that she's one to stand around gawking, but these things...going on and begging to be killed like that...]
What about those--are they monsters?
no subject
Zhey are my crewmates.
no subject
[Despite the protest, she doesn't resist--her magic would take longer to cast, anyway--and then she stares at Marie.]
Your crewmates? What the hell happened to them?
no subject
[Marie just sounds more exhausted than angry at this point, pushing herself up uncomfortably, moving over to the fallen creatures, searching through their pockets for anything worth taking.]
no subject
So the City's brought back those mind-control things again? You could've just captured those guys, you know!
no subject
[She takes several needles from the creatures' pockets, stuffing them into her own.]
Zhe worms poison all zhey touch.
no subject
[Rita stays a few feet away, crossing her arms.]

[Glancing around...]
All this stuff looks ancient. This isn't your ship, is it?
no subject
[Delacroix brushes a lock of her hair off her forehead.]
Zhere will be more soon, zhey always know where you are.
no subject
How did you get rid of them in the first place?
no subject
[She reaches out to grab Rita's arm. Really. They need to not just stand here.]
And I did not. Zhey 'ad killed me, just before I arrive 'ere.
no subject
[She starts to move--and tug her arm away--but then stops short.]
Wait--you-
You're dead?
no subject
[She lets go of Rita's arm, anyway.]
Now, let's go.
no subject
[A little less moody, she follows. There's no point in saying the obvious about what'll happen if Marie goes back home.]
If these things can track, we just need to destroy the centre, right?
no subject
[Marie never made it that far. She doesn't know where it is, what it looks like.]
no subject
It'd be easier just to torch the whole place.
[She doesn't know who else might've wandered in, though.
no subject
[She agrees to that simply.]
Were zhis truly zhe ship, I would not 'esitate, but I do not know 'ow many citizens would be endangered by zhis, at zhe present time.
no subject
[It sort of nags at her, leaving it like this.]
You don't even have an idea about where it is? What it looks like, or anything?
no subject
[And she had died there.]
